An exciting morning flight takes us towards Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. On a clear day, the flight offers spectacular views of the Himalayan range.
After meeting our porter team and preparing our gear in Lukla, we begin our trek. The trail generally descends through beautiful Sherpa settlements, forests and farmland before following the Dudh Koshi River towards Phakding.
This first trekking day is deliberately comfortable, allowing your body to begin adjusting to the mountain environment.
After breakfast, we follow the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several suspension bridges and passing through villages including Monjo. We enter Sagarmatha National Park and continue towards the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge.
The final section involves a steady uphill climb through pine forest. On a clear day, you may catch your first glimpse of Mount Everest before reaching Namche Bazaar.
Namche is the main trading centre of the Khumbu and one of the most fascinating Sherpa towns in the Everest region.
Today is an important acclimatization day. Rather than remaining inactive, we take a gradual hike above Namche towards the Everest View Hotel, where clear weather can provide magnificent views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and other surrounding peaks.
Depending on conditions and the group’s preference, we can continue towards Khumjung village before returning to Namche.
The principle of hiking higher and sleeping lower helps your body adapt before continuing further into the high Himalayas.
We leave Namche on a beautiful trail with panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam. The trail gradually descends towards the Dudh Koshi River before climbing through rhododendron and pine forests to Tengboche.
At Tengboche, we can visit the famous Tengboche Monastery, one of the most important Buddhist monasteries in the Khumbu region. After enjoying the mountain scenery, we make a short descent through forest to Deboche for our overnight stay.
After breakfast, we continue through beautiful Himalayan landscapes and cross the Imja River. The trail passes through Pangboche, one of the oldest permanent Sherpa settlements in the region.
As we climb higher, vegetation becomes thinner and the landscape becomes increasingly alpine. Ama Dablam dominates the skyline as we make our way towards Dingboche.
We arrive at Dingboche, surrounded by stone-walled fields and spectacular mountain scenery, where we spend two nights to assist acclimatization.
Our second acclimatization day is spent in Dingboche. After breakfast, we take a gradual hike towards Nangkartshang (Nagarjun) Hill.
The climb provides excellent views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Makalu, Island Peak and the surrounding valleys. We do not need to reach the highest point; the guide will determine a suitable turnaround point according to weather, trail conditions and the group’s acclimatization.
We descend back to Dingboche for lunch and spend the remainder of the day resting and preparing for the higher sections of the trek.
Today we climb gradually through the broad valley above Dingboche towards Thukla. After a break, a steeper ascent takes us to the memorial area dedicated to climbers who lost their lives in the Everest region.
From here, the trail becomes more gradual as we continue through rugged high-altitude terrain towards Lobuche.
The surrounding landscape is dramatic, with close-up views of Himalayan peaks and glaciers. We rest early in Lobuche in preparation for our journey to Everest Base Camp the following day.
Today is one of the biggest highlights of the entire journey.
We leave Lobuche and trek alongside the Khumbu Glacier towards Gorak Shep. After reaching Gorak Shep, we check into our lodge, have a short break and continue towards Everest Base Camp.
The trail crosses rugged glacial terrain and provides impressive views of the Khumbu Glacier, Khumbu Icefall and surrounding mountains.
Finally, we reach Everest Base Camp at approximately 5,364 metres. After celebrating this memorable achievement and taking photographs, we retrace our steps to Gorak Shep.
We wake early for the climb to Kala Patthar, weather and trail conditions permitting. The viewpoint is renowned for some of the finest close-up views of Mount Everest.
From Kala Patthar, the Himalayan panorama can include Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Pumori and numerous surrounding peaks. After enjoying the views, we descend to Gorak Shep for breakfast.
We then leave the high-altitude landscape behind and descend past Lobuche and Thukla towards Pheriche, where the thicker air and lower elevation are usually a welcome change.
After breakfast, we continue our descent through the beautiful Khumbu Valley. We pass familiar Sherpa settlements and cross rivers before returning through the Tengboche area.
The trail includes both descending and some short uphill sections before eventually returning to Namche Bazaar.
After several days at high altitude, arriving back in the lively atmosphere of Namche is a wonderful feeling. The evening is free to relax and celebrate the successful completion of the highest section of the trek.
